In our Beauty Awards issue out now on newsstands, 31% of readers voted Selena Gomez for Best Hair. Is it any surprise? She has full, thick, super-shiny locks that are absolutely envy-inducing.

When she took the stage for her win as Favorite Female Singer at the Kids’ Choice Awards with a gorgeous naturally curly hairstyle, the only word on our minds was “summer”. Leave it to Selena to be thinking ahead.

Naturally, we dialed Marissa Marino, her hair stylist for the evening (and for her recently wrapped tour), to break down the look. “For the tour, we did that relaxed, casual look a few times, but we’ve never done it on a red carpet,” Marino says. “But it was the Kids’ Choice Awards! So we could have some fun. Selena is so open, so we get to experiment a lot.” Here’s how to steal the look for yourself.

1.For starters, Selena let her hair air-dry with a little detangling product to enhance her natural texture. But if you’re not curly like her, Marino advises spraying a beach spray all over and rough drying to build volume and a bit of a wave. “Once her hair was dry, we sprayed Unite Beach Day spray in to define her curl without making it too sticky or crunchy, then blow-dried all over while twisting sections with my fingers,” the stylist says. “Make sure to aim down to avoid frizz!”

2. “Once it was all dry, I took it section by section, wrapping hair around a 3/4″ curling wand.”

3. “Then, we did a deep side part so it would be big and beautiful! Once it was all done, we flipped her head over and shook it out, setting with hairspray.”

But we all healthy hair care is the foundation for gorgeous hair like Selena’s. Marino says the singer treats herself to a weekly conditioning treatment using the Unite U Luxury Intense Hair Mask. It keeps her curls hydrated and those gorgeous highlights from fraying.
