In fascinating movie news, one of the buzziest flicks of 2013 is officially getting the part-two treatment. OK, so it’s actually dubbedSpring Breakers: The Second Comingand it’s not adirectsequel tolast year’s instant cult classic, meaning it won’t reprise any of the original stars (Selena Gomez,Vanessa Hudgens,Ashley Benson, andJames Franco, of course), but we’re so interested to see what happens to the next batch of bikini-clad kids that we don’t even care.
For the uninitiated, the first film, is, well, kind ofhard to summarize, but we shall try our best: It tells the tale of a group of girls who have a liiiiittle bit too much fun on spring break, get bailed out of jail by a Britney-Spears-singing gangster named Alien (Franco!) and form a weird friendship with him. We’re still a little fuzzy on what all went down—but that’s kind of the point.
The sequel is set to focus on a brand-new band of partners in crime who have a run-in of sorts with a religious group that’s on a mission to convert them, so we’re obviously expecting something intriguing. And since the OGSpring Breakersalmost felt like a really long, really crazy music video, we’re extra stoked that director Harmony Korine is passing the torch to Swedish filmmaker Jonas Akerlund, whose credits includeLady Gaga’s“Paparazzi” and “Telephone,” andBeyoncé’s “Haunted.” Yep, we like it already!
